Measuring the black hole masses of high redshift quasars

چکیده
A new technique is presented for determining the black-hole masses of high-redshift quasars from optical spectroscopy. The new method utilizes the full-width half maximum (FWHM) of the low-ionization Mgii emission line and the correlation between broad-line region (BLR) radius and continuum luminosity at 3000Å. Using archival UV spectra it is found that the correlation between BLR radius and 3000Å luminosity is tighter than the established correlation with 5100Å luminosity. Furthermore, it is shown that, when considered together, both correlations are most consistent with a relation of the form RBLR ∝ λL 0.5 λ , as expected for a constant ionization parameter. Using a sample of objects with broad-line radii determined from reverberation mapping it is shown that the FWHM of Mg ii and Hβ are consistent with following an exact one-to-one relation, as expected if both Hβ and Mgii are emitted at the same radius from the central ionizing source. The resulting virial black-hole mass estimator based on rest-frame UV observables is shown to reproduce black-hole mass measurements based on reverberation mapping to within a factor of 2.5 (1σ). Finally, the new UV black-hole mass estimator is shown to produce identical results to the established optical (Hβ) estimator when applied to 128 intermediate-redshift (0.3 < z < 0.9) quasars drawn from the Large Bright Quasar Survey and the radio-selected Molonglo quasar sample. We therefore conclude that the new UV virial black-hole mass estimator can be reliably used to estimate the black-hole masses of quasars from z ∼ 0.25 through to the peak epoch of quasar activity at z ∼ 2.5 via optical spectroscopy alone.

The Black Hole Masses of High-Redshift Quasars
A reliable method for estimating the black-hole masses of high-redshift quasars would provide crucial new information for understanding the nature and cosmological evolution of quasars. In this proceedings we summarize the results of our recent paper (McLure & Jarvis 2002) which provides a virial black-hole mass estimator based on rest-frame UV observables, thereby allowing reliable black-hole ...
متن کاملEarly Growth and Efficient Accretion of Massive Black Holes at High Redshift
Black-hole masses of the highest redshift quasars (4 < ∼ z < ∼ 6) are estimated using a previously presented scaling relationship, derived from reverberation mapping of nearby quasars, and compared to quasars at lower redshift. It is shown that the central black holes in luminous z > ∼ 4 quasars are very massive ( ∼ 10M⊙). It is argued that the mass estimates of the high-z quasars are not subje...
متن کاملQuasar Hosts and the Black Hole-Spheroid Connection
I review our current understanding of the structures and ages of the host galaxies of quasars, and the masses of their central black holes. At low redshift, due largely to the impact of the Hubble Space Telescope, there is now compelling evidence that the hosts of quasars with MV < −24 mag are virtually all massive ellipticals, with basic properties indistinguishable from those displayed by the...
متن کاملBlack Hole Masses of High-redshift Quasars
Black-hole masses of distant quasars cannot be measured directly, but can be estimated to within a factor 3 to 5 using scaling relationships involving the quasar luminosity and broad-line width. Why such relationships are reasonable is summarized. The results of applying scaling relationships to data of quasars at a range of redshifts (z ≤ 6.3) are presented. Luminous quasars typically have mas...
متن کاملDetermining Central Black Hole Masses in Distant Active Galaxies
An empirical relationship, of particular interest for studies of high redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars, between the masses of their central black-holes and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) parameters measured in single-epoch AGN spectra is presented. This relationship is calibrated to recently measured reverberation masses of low-redshift AGNs and quasars. An empirical relationship...
